Episode 21: Mayo May Not Delete
For the first time, we're recording an episode in the same room! Which means Hrishi is in arm's length of Samin if she decides to smack him for a bad pun! (No Hrishis were harmed in the making of this episode.) We're talking about the unfortunately named shoofly pie, and a couple that's unfortunately divided on their love of mayonnaise. Listen to this episode while you re-organize your fridge!
Food Ideas Discussed in this Episode:
Ice Cream Sundae Party
The next time you want to give a bunch of 6-year olds a sugar rush, host an Ice Cream Sundae Party. Make any or all of the following, thanks mostly to our king David Lebovitz for all of these recipes.
Burnt Honey Hot Fudge recipe in GOOD THINGS (or try the recipe it’s based on, from Smitten Kitchen)
To caramelize corn flakes, follow the recipe above, but use corn flakes instead of Rice Krispies.
David Lebovitz’s ice cream book
Shoofly Pie
All Shoofly Pie recipes seem to be very similar, and, if you ask Samin, look like they need a lot more salt. This Buttermilk Chess Pie from Lisa Donovan is delicious and follows a similar concept. Lebovitz strikes again! His Crisp Topping is Samin’s favorite streusel.
All the Tunas and Salads
Spicy Tuna Pantry Pasta from GOOD THINGS
Samin loves the Italian and Spanish olive-oil packed tunas from Costco
And when she wants to spend all her money, she gets Ortiz Tuna
Try making a Market Hall--inspired Picante Tuna Salad with a base of chopped romaine, diced tomatoes, pickled jalapeños, chopped cilantro, mayo, and good tuna. Use the jalapeño brine to add some acid.
Chickpea And Cucumber Salad in GOOD THINGS
Hot off the press: Samin’s Substack has a great Bean Salad recipe that came out Thursday.
Or, try a tonnato sauce with tomatoes
Fridge Organization
To organize your fridge, get yourself some Glass Pyrex containers, Painter’s Tape and dispenser and a Brother label maker. You’ll also want some clear acrylic boxes. The key to using things up is being able to see everything when you open the fridge!
Send us a pic of your organized fridge and we’ll post a carousel/lazy susan of them!
(Please note, no Youtube channel or Patreon exists.)
Houston’s
Samin and Hrishi have a very important dinner date at Houston’s in LA. Why Houston’s, you ask? It’s where everyone can be made to feel like a privileged white CEO. There’s nothing you can’t have there. Everyone is a VIP. Hrishi always gets the veggie burger. Samin always gets the artichoke dip.
Trader Joe’s Friend Tour
Mary loves the Golden Berries (Cape Gooseberries), Hrishi loves the Chocolate Covered Honey Grahams, and Samin loves the Taiwanese Scallion Pancakes and Freeze-Dried Ginger Powder.
This episode was NOT sponsored by Costco, Houston’s, or Trader Joe’s though we are not above that–so please call us!!
Yes, we are still talking about Samin’s Substack and Hrishi’s Substack!
Come see Hrishi and Samin live this fall in a city near you!
And order GOOD THINGS, coming September 16th!
